P-Cort Tablet

P-Cort is indicated for the treatment of:

• Flare-ups of asthma and COPD.
• Allergic and inflammatory conditions (rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, vasculitis, inflammatory bowel disease, skin diseases).
• Nephrotic syndrome.
• Replacement therapy in adrenal insufficiency; some cancers and transplant care under specialists.

Reduces inflammation and suppresses the immune response.

Dosage and administration of P-Cort:

• Adults: 5-60 mg daily in one or two doses depending on the condition, preferably in the morning with food.
• Courses longer than about 3 weeks must be reduced gradually.
• Children: by body weight.

P-Cort may interact with:

NSAIDs (ulcer risk), warfarin, antidiabetic drugs, diuretics (low potassium), rifampicin and phenytoin (reduce its effect), live vaccines.

P-Cort should not be used in:

• Untreated systemic infection.
• Live vaccines at immunosuppressive doses.
• Hypersensitivity.

Possible side effects of P-Cort:

• Raised blood sugar, weight gain, mood changes, sleeplessness, high blood pressure, stomach irritation.
• Long-term: bone thinning, infections, cataract, adrenal suppression, growth suppression in children.

Pregnancy category: C

Use of P-Cort in pregnancy and breastfeeding:

Use only if the benefit outweighs the risk; small amounts pass into breast milk.

Precautions while using P-Cort:

• Do not stop suddenly after long use.
• Monitor blood pressure, blood sugar and bone health.
• Avoid contact with chickenpox or measles if not immune.
