G-Chloramphenicl Eye /Ear Eye and Ear Drops

G-Chloramphenicl Eye /Ear is indicated for the treatment of:

• Bacterial eye infections (eye drops, eye ointment).
• Serious infections such as typhoid fever and bacterial meningitis when other antibiotics are unsuitable (systemic use).

Blocks bacterial protein synthesis (50S ribosomal subunit).

Dosage and administration of G-Chloramphenicl Eye /Ear:

• Eye drops: 1 drop every 2 hours for the first 48 hours, then four times daily; ointment at night.
• Systemic: 50 mg/kg/day in divided doses under specialist supervision.

G-Chloramphenicl Eye /Ear may interact with:

Warfarin, phenytoin, sulfonylureas; other bone-marrow-suppressing drugs.

G-Chloramphenicl Eye /Ear should not be used in:

• Hypersensitivity.
• Previous bone marrow suppression with chloramphenicol; newborns (grey baby syndrome) for systemic use.

Possible side effects of G-Chloramphenicl Eye /Ear:

• Local: stinging with eye drops.
• Systemic: bone marrow suppression, grey baby syndrome, nausea, nerve damage.

Pregnancy category: C

Use of G-Chloramphenicl Eye /Ear in pregnancy and breastfeeding:

Avoid systemic use in late pregnancy and breastfeeding.

Precautions while using G-Chloramphenicl Eye /Ear:

• Systemic use needs blood count monitoring.
• Avoid prolonged or repeated use.
