Tibolone

Tibolone is indicated for the treatment of:

• Menopausal symptoms in women more than 1 year after the last period.
• Prevention of osteoporosis in selected women.

Acts like oestrogen, progestogen and androgen in different tissues.

Dosage and administration of Tibolone:

Women: 2.5 mg once daily at the same time each day.

Tibolone may interact with:

Enzyme inducers (rifampicin, carbamazepine, St John's wort) reduce effect; warfarin.

Tibolone should not be used in:

• Pregnancy; breast or endometrial cancer; undiagnosed vaginal bleeding.
• Blood clots, stroke or heart attack history; active liver disease; porphyria.

Possible side effects of Tibolone:

• Vaginal bleeding, breast pain, weight gain, abdominal pain, excess hair growth.
• Raised risk of stroke in the elderly.

Use of Tibolone in pregnancy and breastfeeding:

Must not be used in pregnancy.

Precautions while using Tibolone:

• Regular breast and gynaecological review.
• Use the lowest dose for the shortest time.
